Position Title: Police Chief
Reports to: Police Board

Weekly Hours: 40
Department: Police Department
Salary: $103,334.40

Position Summary:

The Police Chief reports directly to the Police Board and is responsible to oversee the development of the police
service strategic plan with focus on prevention, intervention and enforcement. The position demonstrates a
positive and co-operative working relationship with all stakeholders and the community and has a commitment
to excellent service. The Springfield Police Services operates under a secondment arrangement with the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police.

Primary Responsibilities

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.

related.

• Oversee the development of a police service strategic plan with focus on prevention, intervention and
enforcement
• Evaluate the success in implementing the strategic plan
• Oversee the development and review procedures of the Police Service
• Hold accountability for staff of Springfield Police Service
• Liaise with Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Oakbank Detachment and abide by any approved
agreements
• Hold accountability for the approved budget
• Hold accountability for the collection, collation, dissemination and security of police information and
data
• Champion the use of policing strategies, programs, and tactics in the police service such as: intelligence led, evidence-based, and mission-based policing and problem-orientated policing to mitigate crime and
disorder issues in partnership with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police
• Champion the use of varying communication strategies to achieve common goals, influence and gain
stakeholder support
• Hold accountability for community and media relations

• Develop relationships with leaders, organizations, and oversight and governing bodies.
• Value diversity in a respectful policing environment

Education
• A bachelors degree in social sciences or management or related field is preferred; or a combination of
experience, education and training may substitute for formal education
Experience
• Must have at least ten years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience in patrol,
investigations and emergency response programs
• Must have at least eight years of progressively responsible policing leadership and management
experience in an operational setting
• Experience in dealing with the media and community relations is preferred
• Experience in working within governance structures is preferred
• Experience in developing procedures is preferred

Knowledge

• Must have advanced knowledge of law enforcement, legislation and policy regarding public safety
• Must have advanced knowledge of local, regional, national and international policing issues,
philosophies, practices and trends
• Must have advanced knowledge of current law enforcement management and administrative standards
• Advanced knowledge of governance structures is preferred
Additional Requirements
• Must have valid Canadian driver’s licence
• Must have valid first aid certificate and CPR certificate
• Must be a Canadian citizen
• Must pass a security clearance investigation
