On October 19, 1969 at 3:00 p.m. twenty-two year old Oswald BEAR left his parents home in Peguis First Nation, Manitoba to go to the bush a short distance east of the house and cut some wood. BEAR was very familiar with the bush and enjoyed chopping wood. He spent a lot of time in the bush area and knew it well. He had never been lost in the bush and had never failed to return home previously. He visited at his sister's residence nearby at 6:15 p.m. Shortly thereafter, his sister told him that he should go home so that their mother didn't worry. When BEAR left her residence, his intention was to go home but he has not been seen since. At 10:30 p.m. BEAR was reported missing to the police. An extensive ground search was conducted without success immediately after the initial report, however no trace of Oswald BEAR was ever found.
